The converging valleys of the Moose, Passumpsic and Sleeper's rivers create a striking range of elevations upon which St. Johnsbury grew. The town was named after the French consul in New York, Saint Jean de Crèvecoeur, a friend of Ethan Allen and author of “Letters of an American Farmer.” Crèvecoeur suggested the addition of “bury” to the town's name to distinguish it from the many towns named St. John.
